Gone back to investigating the eight kanji in the Reflector sub-block circle. Best bet so far is that they're related to the hakke trigrams, although the kanji aren't the same-- similar to the traditional zodiac kanji not matching the normal animals, the hakke seem to use a set of kanji that don't match the standard ones for those elements.

All I can tell at the moment about the block circle itself is that it has 風  (kaze, "wind") at the top. The one to its left might be 照 (terasu, "shine"). The one on the far left could be 雷 (kaminari, "thunderbolt"), but that's even more speculative.

This ref has a chart that places "north" at the top, and can be semi-conveniently cross-ref'ed against this other page (which lists them in a different sequence). Starting with north/top and moving clockwise (I may try to convert this list into a table later), the first ref's chart shows this sequence--

N: 坎 kan -- water
NE: 艮 gon -- mountain
E: 震 shin -- lighting
SE: 巽 son -- wind
S: 離 ri -- fire
SW: 坤 kon -- earth
W: 兌 da -- swamp
NW: 乾 ken -- heaven

-- corresponding to the traditional "Later Heaven" arrangement, which in turn can be partially mapped onto the sequence of Orochi's heads with a lot of handwaving.

The second page's sequence--

Ken (乾): Heaven
Da (兌): Swamp
Ri (離): Fire
Shin (震): Lighting
Son (巽): Wind
Kan (坎): Water
Gon (艮): Mountain
Kon (坤): Earth

-- doesn't match up to "Earlier Heaven" arrangement, though.

...then again, someone on the Okamiworld forum has suggested that the kanji are randomly chosen from the brushstroke display pool, which in some ways would be much more elegant.
