Accidentally slammed my right ring finger into my car door yesterday morning. The local urgent-care place didn't have their X-ray machine around but said that it probably wouldn't make much difference to the treatment plan whether there was an actual fracture or not, so for now they just gave me a tetanus shot, a bandage with a lot of antibiotic ointment underneath, a splint, and a prescription for painkillers.
I'll probably lose that fingernail, since the impact was right along the base and it was already turning black within a few hours. Although it was bleeding with great determination (and may still be doing so; there was still visible seepage/dripping through/around the bandage by bedtime last night), it wasn't really a stitchable sort of wound-- a shallow layer of flesh had simply peeled off the entire top of that segment. It doesn't hurt nearly as much this morning and I haven't had to take another Vicodin yet; I did at least miss the actual joint and still seem to have the full range of articulation/sensation, so it may be Just A Flesh Wound.
Their X-ray machine will be back on Monday morning, so we'll get to go back for another look. I've never broken a bone before and so have no basis for comparison along those lines, but really must say that having all four fingers definitely, simultaneously broken by a door-slam as in Kara Thrace's backstory must be one of the more hideous sensations possible.

on 2008-10-26 11:42 pm (UTC)Glad you have full range of sensation and movement. Also hooray for Vicodin. Hope the damage to the finger is really minimal and gets better fast.
