However, probably no one really thinks of it that way; the "kaerinasai" imperative is only about halfway up the courtesy scale, between the plain imperative "kaere" ("return!") and the polite "kaette kudasai" (based on another honorific verb, "kudasai"; the semi-literal translation would be something like "Kindly bestow your returning upon my unworthy self") and well below the formal "okaeri nasaimase", where the second word is the *formal* imperative of "nasaru": "May you gloriously accomplish an honorable return"? However, these semi-literal versions aren't terribly useful, since in actual conversation the four levels of imperative are probably more equivalent to "Get back (t)here, dammit!", "Come back here, right now" (or "Go back there, right now"), "Please return", and "Excuse me, would you mind returning?"]

Since I'm not sure how to drop down the formality of the middle line, I'm making the last one more colloquial instead.]

There's a large sound effect in the foreground, but it isn't coming from either Kenshin or Kaoru-- he's mid-frame; her arms are coming out of the lower left corner; the sound effect is coming from the lower right corner-- so I think it's actually Yahiko snoring, since that's one of the possibilities listed in my sound-effect references, and nothing else for this sound matches what K&K are doing right now.

[I'll have to make a guess here because I'm spacing out again and I just realized the wombat-consort and I are going to be out of town all next week, so I'm hoping to finish this translation before then. "Son ja" seems to be an idiomatic remark, probably based on "sono de wa" (that+[semiformal copula]) and variously translated as "anyway", "now then", and so on.]

Annoyed, she yanks at his ponytail to face the right way.

[ :b I swear I tried to identify the "hitoe" kanji for three or four days until I gave up and kept going. The right half is mostly a big rectangular blob in my doujinshi copy, and it turns out that the entire kanji is rare enough that it isn't in any of my three dictionaries anyway. Luckily Jim Breen's multiradical kanji search engine came to the rescue just now. Not sure whether the "hitoe" she's referring to is her sleep yukata (technically called "nemaki", but never mind), the inner layer of Kenshin's everyday street clothes, or whatever. There are several possible translations, depending on which words I add in:]
-- "What the-- he's exhausted just from half-removing my yukata?"
-- "What kind of lovemaking is this? It didn't even last until my yukata was off..."
-- "Then why is he stripping down to his underwear?"

[Actually, Kenshin keeps his clothing on from the waist up, but the next few times we get a view of him from the waist down, first his hakana (trouserlike things) looks loose, then his upper clothing is untucked and hanging down, and then his hakama is shedding off like a snakeskin as he rolls around with Kaoru. So I suppose that what just happened here is that he simply untied his hakama. I still don't think it's clear from the artwork, though.]

[But I guess that means the correct translation of Kaoru's line should be:]
-- "Then why is he untying only his hakama?" (instead of also taking off his outer kimono to strip down to a single undergarment, which is probably close enough to nemaki for a very drunk oro-chan), or maybe
-- "Is that the only reason he's taking his clothes off?"

[As a brief reminder, "hoshii" functions as an adjective but the smoothest translation into English is generally the verb "to like", hence "neko wa hoshii" ~ "I like cats" (or "Me gustan los gatos" for gratuitous Spanish); "ima suku" seems to be an idiom for "right now", perhaps in a sense of "empty out the present moment, because this other thing I'm about to say is urgent"? I think this is actually the first time in this piece where Kenshin's addressed her as "Kaoru-dono", using the slightly archaic honorific he uses for all women.]

Under normal circumstances, his sakabatou is the mutant katana he uses in combat; he was wearing it when he walked into this room, but by the end of page 2, it had fallen out of his waistband onto the floor and is pretty much never seen again. Just as well, really. His old nom-de-guerre, "Battousai", was based on his mastery of battoujutsu (the practice of sword-drawing techniques); "noutoujutsu" is the equivalent for the proper techniques of resheathing the katana.]

She's rather upset by his declaration (I couldn't figure out how to phrase it in a way that didn't also sound like a battle challenge, but she doesn't seem to be concerned in that sense), as well as by his resumed tonguework on her torso.

["ippon" is a counting word based on "hon", which seems to have originated in the concept "treetrunk" and has since diversified from there into the meanings "basis" and "book" (via "paper scroll"?), among others. The types of objects counted with "hon" include living plants and long/cylindrical things (heh).]

(I don't think the word "masterpiece" would be entirely accurate for the latter, since iirc a masterpiece was originally the equivalent of a guild journeyman's graduate thesis.) However, in the specific context of RK, "shinuchi" was used to describe Kenshin's replacement sakabatou; made by the same smith who forged the first sakabatou, it was essentially the apotheosis of the Platonic ideal sakabatou and had been dedicated to a Shinto shrine during the intervening years.]
