Canned cod liver = weirdly delicious.
In lieu of taking cod liver oil as a nutritional supplement, I've started hunting down more oily fish to eat-- so far, mostly canned, because I'm not confident about either selecting fresh fish or cooking it properly.
Canned sardines are reasonably tasty. Canned sprats in tomato sauce ditto.
The canned cod liver is absolutely cracktastic. It's got a luscious, buttery texture perfect for spreading on flatbread, and a relatively subtle fishy taste on the tongue. I'm not sure whether it has a more pervasive low-level fishiness that keeps re-emerging later on, or whether that's the result of my accidentally spilling some of the oil when I opened the can.
What I really want to do is hit one of the small Japanese groceries tomorrow for some of their prepared saba shioyaki. Every so often I get one of their bento lunches with a little piece of saba, and it is nomtastic. This gives me an excuse to get an entire small slab and bring it home to chomp on while the cats satellite around me in a high-speed Oort cloud.
