Have finally gotten around to watching Avatar; the tipping point was a recent mention of enjoyment by
snarkel, who has been (otherwise?) immune to anime. So far, we've viewed up through season 3, disc 1; certainly a well-crafted show, though the recent run of filler episodes is getting mildly irksome.
Probably unoriginal analysis of the show's appeal: due to the venue (Nickelodeon), it doesn't have the degree of violence/sexuality that strikes some viewers as exploitative and offputting in standard anime; the characters and plot are also much more sophisticated than the particular combat/merchandising type of anime which the original target age group (and their long-suffering parents) may've been accustomed to.( Read more... )
