Having recently rediscovered the bag of whole-wheat bread flour I bought earlier this year to try
recursive's pita bread recipe, I'm wondering whether to try making bagels, which seem more congenial to long-term storage in the freezer and defrosting by toaster. I'm pretty sure there're some packets of yeast in the cupboard, too... what with the vacuum-sealed foil, hopefully it's still active.
In the meantime, anyone got suggestions for Stuff To Eat With Bagels while I work my way through the sack of them I just bought? Cream cheese and onions are inconsistently compatible with my digestive system (though a lot of the time I try anyway, no doubt to the distress of other people in my airspace); lox (or at least Safeway's smoked salmon-- I have no idea whether it's possible to get Real Lox in the Bay Area) is tasty, but relatively pricey and rather bad for my blood pressure.
Capers? Pickle relish? Sliced boiled eggs? (I suppose I could combine all of those into a batch of tuna salad and make sandwiches, come to think of it....)
