[personal profile] wombat1138
The circle name for this doujinshi appears to be "Raspberry & Blueberry", nicknamed "RasBlue"-- apparently a secondary alias for the (now-retired) IY fan artist Sakuban.

Usual warnings: I have no real idea what I'm doing except for juggling a lot of reference books/websites; there is a reasonable chance that any part of my results may be completely wrong. Unless you are Urd-chan, do not turn these into English-language scanslations or I will be cross. Grrr.

Vague format key--

#N# : page number

+++ : frame/group break (sometimes I leave these out)
| : internal balloon/group break if compressing several short segments into the same line of text; linebreak if separating out longish text from a single balloon/caption.

Frame/balloon order is generally from right to left and from top to bottom. The kana for "tsu" is sometimes used to indicate a glottal stop, as in a sudden gasp or an abrupt break in speech; in those cases, I'll transcribe it as "*" instead.

direct kanja/kana transcription (solid text blocks indicate individual lines)
= raw romaji: [kanji], hiragana, KATAKANA, words-linked-inna-phrase, (handwritten marginalia), ~sound fx~
- misc. analysis: idiomatic notes, grammatical contractions unpacked from the raw transcription if necessary (e.g., "inna" <- "in a") etc.

= raw gloss: [word function]*, literal-translation
*functional abbreviations: [T]opic, emphatic [S]ubject, [O]bject, unidentified [P]article, [C]opula, [Q]uestion, [N]ame; [aX] (animate existence), [iX] (inanimate existence), ["] (quotation), [+] (honorific), [rQ] (rhetorical question), [mM] (emotional emphasis), [fM] (factual emphasis)

Narrative descriptions
[cranky editorial notes]
-- "occasional coherent(ish) translations"

Because of the new experiment with adding a raw transcription layer, my formatting will be even more irregular than usual, so don't take the above list too much to heart :b The original typography makes a lot more use of smaller fonts for long vowels; I've replicated that in the transcript, but probably won't do anything else about those in the transliteration layer.

Page numbers taken from filenames in Urd-chan's scan set.

There really is a sharp division in the speech level used by IY himself and, well, almost everyone else. He uses a lot of slangy contractions and is generally rude.

:| I can't figure out the implicit pronoun references for this intro at all-- they could be "If I do X, then you do Y (in response)" or "If you do X, then I do Y"... or "if both of us do X, then (afterwards) we both do Y" argharghargh.

(After working thorough more pages, I'm coming to the conclusion that the large narrative captions are Inuyasha's thoughts, but I'm not sure I have actual proof of this :| :| )

First caption block: 近づけば 離れて 追いかければ 逃げていく
- 近づける: [chi]dzukeru, "bring near, allow contact"; "-(d)zu-" attatchment/continuation infix can also be written w/ the kanji 付 (also pronouncable as "-tsu-")
- 離れる: [hana]reru, "become separated"
- 追う: [a]u, "pursue"; 追いかける: [a]ikakeru, "chase after someone" (can also be written as 追い掛ける, [a]i[ka]keru <- 掛 [ka] ~"hang onto, suspend from")
- 逃げる: [ni]geru, "escape, run away"
= [chi]dzukeba | [hana]rete | [a]ikakereba | [ni]gete-iku
= if-becoming-closer | becoming-separated | if-chasing-someone | go-running-away

Option #1: (IY warning Kagome against his own courtship? "If I come near you, you should move away. If you're chasing me, you should flee"?)
Option #2: (frustrated complaint at the other person's behavior? "When I come near you, you move away instead. When I chase you, you flee from me"?)

Option #3: (general observation about relationship decay?)
-- "Whenever people become close, eventually they drift apart again. No matter how hard you chase someone, eventually they'll get away."

Option #4: (IY aware of his own skittishness?)
-- "When you come close to me, I move away. When you chase me, I flee."

Second caption block: 時の流れ 逆らうことなど できない
- 時: [toki], "time"

Cultural note: supposedly in Japan, all of the frantic study-cramming takes place in middle school and high school; once people get into college, the curriculum is relatively easy. I don't know whether this is actually true, but it would explain Kagome's following answer. Also, I think the age of consent and the end of compulsory education are at the end of middle school, after which people can get married or start to work full-time?

By contrast, the usual boundary of "adulthood" in the US is 21, which is the national minimum for legally consuming alcohol, and the age at which on-track college students are about ready to graduate from their four-year undergraduate degree. There are also some younger cutoffs: the legal driving age varies from state to state, but at 18, people are generally considered capable of signing legal agreements and contracts, such as joining the military.

Miroku and Kagome stare at IY's back turned toward them.

[I think that both of the next two balloons may belong to Miroku because of the first one's "[o]kotte'masu" structure and the second one's dialogue continuation onto the next page. OTOH, the question/answer pattern may mean that the first balloon is really Kagome. Argh.]

- de-[waru]katta: idiomatic apology or self-deprecation, ~"unfortunately", "I'm sorry that..." etc.
-- "Unfortunately, he's just a snotty-nosed little brat."

[No, there's no snot reference in the original. However, it was irresistable; iirc Takahashi stated in an official sourcebook that, like a real dog, IY's nose is always cold and damp except when he's sick.]

-- "See? Even the phrasing of his answer betrays his childishness."

IY: うるせぇ!(urusee <- urusai, lit'ly "annoying" but idiomatically "Be quiet!", "Shut up!" etc.)

Kagome: ~ズキッ~ (ZUKI*: a sharp pain)

#19#

The two speech attributions in the first panel are messing me up again :|

I think the first boldface line is another internal narrative caption as IY instantly regrets what he said. Or it could be Miroku already starting to yell at IY. Or it could be Kagome's inner reaction.

?: ひどい それ言うの?
= hidoi | sore iu-no?
[Semi-literal, whoever it is: "That was a cruel thing to say, wasn't it?", "How horrible to say that", etc.]
-- (IY?) "Why did I say something that cruel to her?" or more loosely "...I didn't mean to hurt her like that."
-- (Miroku?) "How dare you speak so cruelly?!"
-- (Kagome?) "Did he really say something that cruel to me?"

The little balloon might be Miroku momentarily stuttering with wrath as he leads into the tirade in the next panel. Or it could be someone else starting to speak before getting cut off by Miroku's tirade.

?: お.. (o..)
[I think this is either a cut-off "ore" ("I--") from IY, or the start of Miroku's
"omae" ("You--").]

+++

Miroku: おまえといぅヤツは おなごに対して なんてひどいこよを!
- 対: [tai], "ratio, opposition"; [tsui], "couple, set"[noun]
[Only the [tai] pronunciation is marked for verb conversion with "suru".]
= omae to-iu YATSU-wa | onago ni-[tai]-shite | nante hidoi koto-wo!!
- yatsu: a really rather rude pronoun-type word.
[I have come to think that the official translation of "Urusei Yatsura" (the name of an earlier series by Takahashi) as "Those Annoying Aliens" is completely inadequate, and would be better conveyed as "Those Assholes from Planet Spaz". (Or "...Outer Spaz", but I'm not sure if the interplanetary pun would be instantly obvious.)]
- onago <-? 女子 [onago], "young woman"
- ni-[tai]-suru: "regarding"?
[Slightly more literal: "The words you just said-- you are a [crude person] to speak so cruelly about a young lady!"]
-- "Only a complete son-of-a-bitch would speak to a young lady so cruelly!"

[Wrong side of IY's family, of course, but another failure to resist a pun :| ]

かごめ様に あやまれ!!
= Kagome-[sama]-ni | ayamare!!

*splat* Have limped and spackled my way to the end in typically pathetic form-- the result mostly makes sense, but in a lot of places I have no idea whether it has any real relation to the original text :b

Possible continuity conflict-- in this doujinshi, the main plot is marked as 2011, with Kagome age 21; the epilogue photos are dated from 2005-2010. However, Takahashi canonically places the start of the IY manga in 1997 when Kagome is ~15 years old. (The 1997 date is captioned into the manga; it's not just contextual from IY beginning publication in 1996.)

According to the traditional Asian age count, a child is 1 year old at birth and is considered one year older on every New Year's Day, but even with the maximum leeway from cross-referencing that with the Western chronological age system (chronologically 13 in 1997, chronologically 21 = 8 years later), the main plot date should be capped at 2005.

The beginning date may be a typo for 2002 (there should be another zero in the middle, and the numeric strokes should be paired in a different way than printed), which would be consistent with chronological age = 15 in 1997 = traditional age 16-17; traditional age 21 (chron. 19-20) = 4-5 years later = 2001-2002. This would place the epilogue photos after the main plot, making Kagome 29 years old in 2010.

OTOH, in the first dated photo (2005), Kagome still seems to be wearing her regular school uniform from the series, so maybe RasBlue is ignoring the Takahashi 1997 cite by letting Kagome's age drift along with the publication dates. (This doujinshi's publication date was March 2006.) If Kagome is still 15 years old in 2005, then that makes 2011 consistent with age 21.
