I seem to remember when it came out, though I rarely had the graphics capacity (or interest) to pick up games of this type. The Myst style of wandering around in a weird dark landscape and being sure there's a plot around here somewhere became popular for a while; I've no idea if it still is. (I've heard good things about Planescape: Torment, but all I know of the setting comes from D&D proper.)
