Random Okamiden preview thoughts
(Possible spoilers gleaned from various preview articles/videos, for those worried about such things.)
1.) Capcom has various Japanese clips on YouTube of (I assume) local celebrities such as young athletes and the usual range of "talent" playtesting the game. While my level of instant comprehension is still nearly nonexistent, it's fascinating to compare the reflex exclamations from different groups at the same segments of the game-- the female athletes sound much closer to the male athletes than to the talent bunnies.
2.) This is partially based on having watched a lot of those clips in a row, but I'm starting to wonder if there's merit in one complaint I've seen (standing out from a general aura of kawaii-hypnosis) that the game doesn't look like a proper "sequel" in the sense of expanding the original world or concepts-- the main idea basically seems to be "Play Okami all over again, only cuter!" I don't mind seeing the original characters show up again, but it looks as if a number of original locations are going to just repeat their original puzzles. This might be more fun than it seems at the moment-- I remember that the first time I went through the Spirit Gate, I was delighted that almost all of the "modern" treasure locations still had loot in the same places.
3.) I am charmed by what I've seen of the Baby Imps-- hanafuda cards for masks, tweaked traditional toys for weapons, and color-coded origami hats (though I have no idea how one imp keeps a crane stuck to his head).
4.) The new brush gods are leaving me a bit meh, mostly on metaconceptual grounds-- if they're no longer based on the traditional lunar zodiac, then are they just random new critters? because I can't see any collective theme for them so far. All of the baby gods really are frighteningly adorable, however.
